Depending on your requirements, budget and location, a new instant turf installation can involve the following steps…
1. Soil preparation
Before removing an old lawn, completely kill the old lawn and any weeds using Glyphosate. Allow 2 weeks for this procedure to take effect then remove before bringing in any new soil or soil improver.
When preparing to lay a new lawn, you should keep in mind the soil preparation is the most important stage in your new lawn’s establishment. Taking into account factors like the quality of the existing soil, it’s often recommended to apply at least 100mm of lawn mix soil or black topsoil. This allows for a deeper penetration of air, moisture and roots.
2. Levelling
Removal of debris such as leaves, rocks, branches, twigs, roots, or weeds from the soil area. Then level and shape the ground, when the soil is dry, using a straight board. Allowing approximately 30mm below any paths or driveways to make sure the grass remains level with the surrounding area once laid. Any soil water repellency issue can be overcome with the use of a wetting agent.
Please note: If an irrigation system is to be installed, now is the time to install that system. Keeping in mind, sprinkler heads should ideally be positioned approximately 20mm above the surface of the soil, allowing for the height of the lawn. An sprinkler system is strongly recommended for establishing any lawn, particularly during summer.
3. Soil improvement
After levelling the ground, we recommend the use of a soil improver. This thin layer is then raked through the top of 50mm of soil. This simple step will improve the water holding capacity of the soil and provide important essential nutrients to your lawn.
Just before laying your turf, we recommend wetting the soil and spreading slow release organic fertiliser to assist the new turf’s root development.
4. Laying / Seeding
Turf rolls should be laid as soon as possible after delivery. Seeding should also be done at this point.
5. Watering
Watering a newly laid or seeded lawn is a crucial step that many people don’t water their lawn close to enough. If installing new turf on a hot day, lay the turf in sections and water as you go to prevent drying. Whilst on the cooler days, the entire area can be laid before watering. When ready, water the completed lawn surface thoroughly. Repeat watering at regularly to keep turf moist at all times, until rooted.
The first week and a half after installation are important to get right. In the colder months the turf will take a while longer to establish. The turf should not dry out until the roots are established.
7. Top-dressing
Top-dressing your new lawn very lightly, using a lawn mix or a clean and sandy soil, will help to stop the joints drying out and improve the level, but it is not a vital step.
8. Fertiliser
As with all living things, lawns need to be fed to remain strong and healthy. Apply a good lawn fertiliser, approximately 8 weeks after laying.
We recommend using a complete fertiliser in early April and early September, and a slow release fertiliser should be used for all regular 8 weekly feeds. If you need to green up quickly, apply a fertiliser that is high in nitrogen to promote a lush green lawn. Do not use a fertiliser with added weed killer on Buffalo lawns.
9. Mowing
Mow your new lawn lightly within 7-10 days after the installation in the warmer months, and after it has taken root in the colder months.
